SAFETY QUESTIONS

I will be going through these questions with you near your test date. I hope this information helps.



You will be asked by the examiner at the beginning of your test (before moving off) to tell him how to check something on the car.



When you are driving on you test you will be asked by the examiner to 



  • Clean the front windscreen
  • Clean the rear windscreen
  • Open a side window
  • Use the horn
  • De-Mist the front windscreen
  • De-mist the back window
  • Turn on your head lights



You will only get one of the above questions but remember to only do this when it is safe to do so.



The Questions



Q1. TELL me how you would check that the direction indicators are working correctly

A1. Apply hazard warning switch then you must walk around the car and check that all 6 lights are working. 2 on front, 2 on back and 2 on side wings.



Q2. TELL me how you would check that the brakes are working before you starting a journey.

A2. You need to say:- brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off, vehicle should not pull to one side.



Q3. TELL me how you would check that the brake lights are working on the car.

A3. The examiner will walk around the back of the car, you apply the footbrake (no need to turn engine on) Remember if you don't have someone to help you check at night reverse up to a garage etc and use reflections.



Q4. TELL me/explain how you would check that the power steering is working before starting a journey.

A4. Turn on engine explain that the steering wheel should feel light and very easy to move. If it becomes heavy at any time then the system may not be working.



Q5. TELL me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.

A5. Use manufactures guide or handbook, use a reliable pressure gauge (found at most petrol stations) inflate tyres to the correct pressure, don't forget spare tyre and remember to refit valve caps.



Q6. TELL me how you would check the parking brake (handbrake) for excessive wear keeping safe control of vehicle.

A6. Apply footbrake firmly release handbrake and pull up so when it is fully applied it secures itself and is not at the end of its working travel.


Q7. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and explain how you would check the engine has sufficient engine oil.

A7. Point to dipstick explain on a cold engine and a flat surface remove dipstick wipe clean replace and then remove again and check level on high low marking on end of dipstick.



Q8. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check the engine has the correct level.

A8. Point to the coolant tank high low markings and explain top up if required.



Q9. TELL me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.

A9. Adjust head restraint so that the centre is as high as the eye or top of ears and as close to the back of the head as possible.



Q10. Open bonnet, identify where the windscreen washer is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level.

A10. Point to washer filler bottle, mine has no high low marking, so explain that you would top up with water/windscreen washer once a month



Q11. Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

A11. Point to brake fluid bottle and show high low markings explain if low you would top up with brake fluid.



Q12. TELL me how you would the tyres to ensure they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.

A12. Check tyres have no cuts or bulges. 1.6mm of Tread depth across the central 3/4 breadth of the tyre. Check by looking at nodules or using a 20p coin.



Q13. TELL me how you would turn on your fog lights and tell me when you would use them.

A13. Switch on headlights 2 turns on left stick and then twist further down stick. Fog lights should be used when visibility is less than 100 metres.



Q14. Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your Anti lock braking system.

A14. Warning light would illuminate on dash board. 



Q15. TELL me how you would change the lights from Dipped to main beam and how you would know that they were on whilst in the car.

A15. Turn on head lights and push left stick away from you, a big blue headlight symbol will appear on dashboard point out this symbol to the examiner.
